Abigail Martin

Originally from Northern Kentucky, Abigail Martin is a 2019 graduate of DePauw University.  She earned a Bachelor of Arts with a double major in Peace & Conflict Studies and Religious Studies as well as a Bachelor of Music in Voice Performance.  During her undergraduate career, Abigail participated in an opera program in France, a choral program in South Africa, and service-learning courses in both Northern Ireland and Ghana.  She was an undergraduate research assistant, an active member of restorative justice, and an advocate for social justice and DEI (diversity, equity, and inclusion) initiatives on campus.  Upon graduation, she was awarded the Ferid Murad Medal for the most significant scholarly and/or artistic achievement by a graduating senior.  After graduation, Abigail served as a Peace Corps Volunteer, working in education in Togo.  She taught English to middle school students, co-facilitated training on gender equity and non-violence in schools and participated in the Gender Equity Committee and the Monitoring and Evaluation Task Force.  After evacuation due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Abigail worked as the program developer and coordinator for a pandemic-response summer learning program through the YMCA of Greater Cincinnati.  She then spent two years teaching junior high school English/language arts and reading at Saint Thomas School in Fort Thomas, Kentucky, before moving to France, where she is currently completing a year as an English Teaching Assistant.  She is also serving as a Virtual Service Pilot Participant for Peace Corps/Sri Lanka.  In the fall of 2023, Abigail will begin a Master s in International Development Studies from the Elliott School of International Affairs at George Washington University.  She intends to pursue a concentration in gender and education and looks forward to joining the USAID Foreign Service as an Education Officer.  She is passionate about gender equity, girls’ education, literacy, and local language educational resources.  In her free time, Abigail can be found hiking at the local nature center or singing with a community choir.
